  1. Consumers have increased their use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) due to their greater energy efficiency relative to traditional incandescent bulbs. Despite this benefit, CFLs pose potential environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risks due to the presence of mercury within the lamp itself. Without proper handling and disposal, the mercury can be released, with possible health risks to humans. While each CFL has a small amount of mercury, the cumulative environmental and health effects might be significant.

A recently appointed engineering commissioner in an urban building department is confronted with disconcerting allegations of unethical conduct by one of her supervisors. The supervisor responsible for commercial building inspections is alleged to have enlisted the aid of city employees, on "company time" for construction work on his own home, using city vehicles in the process.

  5. Freedonia is a modest sized country with a population of roughly 20 million. Freedonian Air Force (FAF) has approximately 150 fighter aircraft. The Commander of FAF has realized that operations and maintenance costs for these aircraft are substantially increasing every year due to aging fleet. The Commander wants to develop a long-term acquisition strategy to replace its aging aircraft fleet. The aircraft code-named F-XX is smaller and simpler than contemporaries but it costs less to both procure and operate, making it a popular aircraft.

  6. The Utah County Jeep Patrol was tasked by the Sheriff to conduct all search and rescue operations in the County. However, their existing organizational structure and culture was not conducive to the level of service required by the search and rescue demands. As newer, more enthusiastic members joined the team, they realized a change was needed. In March 2015, Newpoint High School, one of the high-performing charter schools in Escambia County, Florida, suddenly found itself at the heart of a real scandal when the School District announced publically that it appeared there was a possibility that school administrators had pressured teachers to falsify attendance records, delete overdue assignments, give answers to tests, and change grades in order to ensure that Newpoint seniors would advance to graduation. And the suggestion was that this was only the tip of the iceberg.

  9. In a mid-sized U.S. county, children’s lives are lost and the local Office of Child Welfare finds its own information management practices to be implicated in the tragedy. Lucinda Angle, the county executive, is determined to improve the office’s information systems.
