Devising State Policy on Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Consumers have increased their use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) due to their greater energy efficiency relative to traditional incandescent bulbs. Despite this benefit, CFLs pose potential environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risks due to the presence of mercury within the lamp itself. Without proper handling and disposal, the mercury can be released, with possible health risks to humans. While each CFL has a small amount of mercury, the cumulative environmental and health effects might be significant.

Labeling Nanotech in Food

This cases poses a hypothetical debate over efforts at the U.S. state level to mandate labels on food products containing or packaged in materials containing engineered nanomaterials. As such, it closely mirrors recent debates over labeling foods containing genetically engineered (GE) or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The Bedford Falls Academy Charger School

At the beginning of a new school year during the Great Recession, Bedford Falls Academy Executive Director Susan Lundberg proposes an ambitious five-year capital improvement and enrollment growth plan. The plan is a complete surprise to the Board, which had met to discuss the school’s strategy just three months earlier. Over the previous three years the highly leveraged and cash strapped school has purchased a new facility on two hundred acres of property, expanded its enrollment area to surrounding communities, and expanded is programming from grades 5-8 to include grades 9-12.

In this straightforward and timely case, students are tasked with navigating the intricacies of public personnel hiring including the managerial, political, legal, and ethical challenges that are commonly faced by public managers. As the director of a city economic development division, the student must choose between a group of candidates that have applied for a new position that has opened up in the department. Each candidate’s qualifications are described with the inclusion of details from the candidates personal life that create a twist in what should be a simple hiring process.

Loyalty, Ethics and "Whistle Blowing": Confronting Corruption in the Volatile World of Law Enforcement

This ethics-related case focuses on documented corruption in a county sheriff’s department. While such corruption is, unfortunately, not unheard of, this occurrence was initiated and conducted for an extended period of time by the highly respected county sheriff himself. The sheriff, who had served for many years, had been quite successful in modernizing the department and building a reputation of integrity for himself and his department. That his sterling reputation led to his election as head of the State Sheriff’s Association, made his subsequent fall from grace even more damaging.

United or Divided States? U.S.-Mexico Border Simulation

The case actors wrestle with understanding measures of financial performance including EBITDDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, Depletion and Amortization) and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) net income and depreciation.

The Eight Neighbors: A Case Study in Collaboration and Formalization

This case demonstrates most clearly the challenges to starting and sustaining a collaborative partnership. By examining the different steps that the Eight Neighbors partnership has taken between September 2008 and August 2010, this case also highlights the potential benefits and challenges to tackling community-wide issues with an approach that involves different sectors and a diverse set of stakeholders.
